Goat's beard / Jack-go-to-bed-at-noon / Llysiau'r gwenyn / Tragopogon pratensis
Flowers June - July

| It's a bit difficult to catch this plant flowering, as the flowers have a habit of closing at noon, or not opening at all on dull days. Added to that, it has a very short flowering season. I've therefore cheated and used this photo of the large and very distinctive seed head instead. (I hope to add images of seed heads to many of the flower pages on this site in time). Goat's beard is fairly common in field and meadows in most parts of Britain and is closely related to the vegetable salsify, which I used to grow. I photographed this specimen in Parc Bryn Bach in Blaenau Gwent. |
