Enchanter's nightshade / Llysiau'r swynwr / Llysiau Steffan / Circaea Lutetiana
Flowers June - August

| Enchanter's nightshade is not related to any of the 'real' nightshades. Theoretically, it is not in the least bit attractive, as it has very small white flowers growing sparsely up a thin wiry stem. However, the fact that it is to be found (often in great abundance) only in gloomy, dank places and usually in woods, means that there is actually something quite mystical about it. In fact, it's the plant Circe used to turn the shipmates of Ulysses into dogs. I think I photographed this specimen in a wood near Dolgellau. |
